Thousands of children and young adults in Texas are diagnosed with medical needs requiring a bone marrow or organ transplant every year. (See images below.) While transplantation provides an opportunity for the child to live and thrive, new, unforeseen challenges arise. Most families lack preparation to respond to the sudden and overwhelming roadblocks that face them. They face unanticipated financial burdens, moreover, children and families must overcome educational, psychological, and emotional costs, including interruption in school attendance, feelings of helplessness, isolation, and low self-esteem.
